Resolutions

Elisabeth Elliott once said "Today is mine. Tomorrow is none of my business. If I peer anxiously into the fog of the future, I will strain my spiritual eyes so that I will not see clearly what is required of me now."

This reminds me of all of the wonderful New Year's Resolutions everyone makes this time of year. I challenge that we do "Today Resolutions." Alcoholics Anonymous promotes the idea of living "one day at a time." What a novel idea, because we have absolutely no control over more than that. I can choose how I act RIGHT NOW - not even how I will act later today!

When Emily and I do prayers at night, we just pray that we will do a better job tomorrow and try not to do the same sinful things we did today. That is all we can do - just try not to look at the end of the day tomorrow exactly like we looked at the end of the day today.

Today, I resolve to be less easily angered, less doubtful, less impatient, more healthy in my eating. And we'll see at the end of the day how I did and then I can start over tomorrow and with God's help I will be a little bit closer to the goal. This is not to say we should set the bar really low as to achieve our goal, but be realistic that in a sinful world with sin all around us, the bar is high enough already! If we get too bogged down in trying to be perfect for tomorrow, we will miss as Elisabeth Elliott said "what is required of me now" because I will not see myself as usable today!

God bless and enjoy the journey!
